Do not lose the battle with your weeds- there are options! I have two words for you: cardboard and mulch. This new ecological method prevents messy weeds which steal nutrients from the earth and away from your perennials. Pick up some cardboard boxes from a local store and lay them down on top of your weed problem to suffocate them to death. Get plenty of bags of natural mulch from your garden centre.
The fantastic thing about biodegradable boxes is that you don’t even have to weed at all! If you are planting somewhere in that area make a good sized hole in the cardboard now before you lay it down and cover it with mulch. You want 2 inches thick all around your garden to keep down these green enemies. Now you can prevent future weeds without lifting a finger!
Also the traditional method of using landscaping fabric is hyper efficient BUT it does not allow your soil to breathe or allow any leaves to mix into the soil which is vital to its health. In the long run cardboard is superior because landscaping fabric only lasts about 10 years then it needs to be replaced as it becomes so scruffy. Landscape fabric is decent for gardens with a lot of shrubbery, grasses, and tough perennials that you do not plan on moving around anytime in the near future. But it is hard to pull out and replace as your expanding perennials will grow into it. One great thing landscape fabric is good for is hill erosion! Until your shrubs get going this is an excellent way to make sure your soil stays in place.
